Here is a list of things you should NOT do with regards to a video interview. All of the below are ONLY related to the video interview. We know we have not included things like research etc as they will be included in the interview do’s & don’ts. We have tried to focus on aspects that are only for video interviews. You should make sure you do your usual preparation as you would for a face to face interview. Make sure you don’t repeat any of the list below if you wish for a good video interview!
- Don’t treat it any less than a face to face interview
- Don’t just dress up your top half
- Don’t assume you don’t need to check your equipment and connections
- Don’t fidget or tap on your keyboard/desk
- Don’t focus on the screen
- Don’t have distractions around you
- Don’t have strong background light which can make it difficult for interviewer to see you
- Don’t have an inappropriate video software user name
- Don’t get distracted by other apps on your device
- Don’t wear bright colours
- Don’t answer too quickly as delays may occur on the connection
- Don’t lose your temper if things go wrong, e.g. difficulties with webcam, device etc.
- Don’t have phone or computer apps running
- Don’t get too relaxed when at home for the video interview
- Don’t neglect having you body showing via the webcam to show your body language
- Avoid using a swivel chair if you’re fidgety
- Don’t shout
- Don’t get distracted by your own image on the screen
- Don’t disturb or move about the webcam
