Don’t Be Unprepared
Maybe you could just “wing it”, but you WILL come across more relaxed & confident and the whole process is easier if you've practised.
Dress Inappropriately
Research the company dress code and ensure you dress to impress. You want to make a good impression but you won’t if you dress too casual.
Don’t Just Read The Script
It’s important that you be relaxed. The last thing an employer wants to see is you read from a script behind the camera. Talk as if it’s a conversation & show some enthusiasm. Remember the video resume is about impressing so be energetic.
No Dead Spots
The video resume is a short quick story about you and why an employer should choose to interview you. You need to make sure that you avoid having any long pauses. Keep your selling points and words flowing and keep them engaged. Remember not to speak too fast though. You want to be heard & understood.
Poor Body Language
Your facial expressions and body language will demonstrate to the interviewer whether you are interested in the company or not so remain upbeat and avoid negative body language like crossing your arms or looking down at the floor. It’s important to look at your audience and look positive & engaging.
Don’t Fidget
Fidgeting looks bad in an in-person interview, but it is even more noticeable on camera because the only thing the viewer has to see is you. Take a few deep breaths before beginning. Relax and have fun with it (just not too much).
Don’t Forget To Attach Cover Letter
If an employer is open to video resumes you should also write a cover letter. They may want to read through content while watching the video and it will give you an opportunity to elaborate on things you don’t have time to on the video resume.
