When you decided what type of job you want to apply for, did you ever think what made you decide that? Whether you realise it or not, there are certain influences that determine what type of jobs we apply for. Some of these influences are down to the industry/job requirements you wish to work in and others are down to you. Below we have listed the things that can influence your decision on what types of jobs to apply for.
Interests – What things you like and things you enjoy doing can influence the particular jobs you wish to pursue or want to do including the industry you choose. Do you like being outdoors or indoors? Do you like working on computers? Do you hate doing reports & paperwork etc. Your interests will make you lean towards a certain industry/job.
Abilities – Every individual will have their OWN skills and abilities. These can influence us to pursue certain jobs e.g. strong maths skills may pursue career working with numbers (accountant etc). Individuals with good verbal skills may pursue careers where they can use them e.g. customer services, sales person. Whatever your skills & abilities are will impact the jobs you want to do & the ones you can do!
Values – You’ll be much happier in a career if the requirements for the job match your values. If your family orientated then long shifts away from family won’t be ideal for you and will make the job harder for you. It is important to examine your values and find out which ones you can compromise on and ones you can’t to find the jobs/industries that suit them!
Personality – Are you a hard worker or do you prefer a more relaxed work attitude? Have you got patience? Do you buckle under pressure? Our personality traits can have a huge influence on the type of jobs we can & cannot do. If you not got patience, then a job working with teenagers is probably not right for you. It is important that you don’t try and do jobs that you are not suited for. You are only setting yourself up to struggle & fall. Look at your own personality traits can discover what jobs they match up too!

If you’re determined to get into that industry then you need to discover ways to help you get the required experiences needed. If not, then you have to be practical and look at the jobs your experiences allows you to do!
